SO, as part of the diamond buying process my FH made an excellent deal with the jeweler. My diamond came with an AGS (American Gemological Society) certification. Fortunately, having done his extensive research, he knew that GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has the highest standards. GIA also inscribes a "serial number" on the side of the table (that's crazy!). It's so tiny you can never see it with the naked eye, but if you need to send the stone or the entire ring out for work (which most of us will have to do at some point in our lives) there is absolutely NO way for the stone to be switched or damaged without the our knowing upon its return. ALSO, because GIA standards are historically more stringent, we will have extra reassurance by an outside party that we are getting exactly what we paid for. This process can evidently cost around 200-300.
ANYWAY, before he agreed to buy, FH made it a condition of the sale that they send the diamond out for GIA Certification and Inscription. If the stone comes back with a lower certification in ANY way, the jeweler has guaranteed 100% money back, or replacement by a higher quality diamond.
We got engaged last Friday, and even though we went to see the jeweler the next day to design the setting, I couldn't give up the ring I had JUST gotten the night before! I wanted to be able to show it to my friends and family. That's at least half the fun!! :p FH had anticipated my enthusiasm and reluctance to let go of it again so soon, so we waited until yesterday to take it back in. I'm SO glad he did it this way-it was undoubtedly the very best long term decision....but I miss my sparkle.... :(
