I've missed blogging over here, but as I said, there was a reason for the move. It was great to hear all your ideas! Believe it or not, after all your hard work.... I decided to stick with Kate the Bride. I know, I'm boring. It's already in the URL. I'm comfortable with it; it might even be growing on me. So, I picked a random winner for the contest, and the winner is: bananapants! YAYAYAYAY! Check out her blog, isn't it great? Lots of great inspiration pictures. I won't be blogging here anymore, but I'll definitely be reading and commenting on everyone's posts, because you guys are the best! "Kate the Bride" just isn't doing it for me. I want something that reflects me and my personality a little better. Plus, look at the cute dinosaur header! I need something that reflects that cute quirkiness. Help name my blog, and you could win a Priority Mail Flat Rate box full of wedding planning goodies, including books and magazines. It's stuff I've used that I'm done with now, and I want it to find a good home! Includes the book "The Knot's Complete Guide to Weddings" (brand new), and several copies of Elegant Bride and Bridal Guide. So get suggesting! If I don't take any of the suggestions here, I'll still give out the goodies to one lucky commenter drawn out of a hat (note: you must live in the USA or have an APO/FPO address, so I can send the box Priority Flat Rate). ]]> Inspiration Board - A beautiful fall wedding http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/92561 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/92561 Sun, 25 Oct 2009 21:33:00 PST My dear friend Jess got married this weekend, and I was so honored to be up there beside her! The brown dress I picked out worked out perfectly with the dresses all the other girls had picked individually; proof that it can be done. They got married in western Massachusetts at a beautiful ski lodge. The room was filled with white lights, and all the decorations were perfectly fall appropriate! Best of all, the couple was truly in love, living in the moment, happy to be together. Yipee! It's not quite what I imagined- I had thought I'd end up in another financial services position, assisting financial big wigs, and instead I'm an admin at a school. Everyone seems really nice and I think the job will have a lot of learning opportunities. The job is temp right now, but is set to go perm in the next few months. Working is definitely going to go a long way in helping to save for the wedding! Bridezilla shopping spree, here I come! Good luck to all you brides out there looking for jobs! I've always been more of a salty snack kind of girl- chips, crackers, popcorn. So why didn't it occur to me until now that I could add some of my favorite salty stuff to our "candy" buffet? It'll add great variety! And stuff like this will be easy to pick up at Costco right before the wedding! Goldfish, pretzels, popcorn, and of course, my much beloved Doritos. I have a feeling we may need to buy more glass containers...]]> Hats - It's not a party without hats http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/88567 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/88567 Sat, 10 Oct 2009 15:05:00 PST I love party hats. I think too few parties have hats. While browsing some blogs in search of inspiration for cute things to have or do at the reception, I had a scathingly brilliant idea- PARTY HATS! The paper crown kind that you get in Christmas crackers! This could be fun. My Mom tries to always have crackers at Christmas, and we all have a great time playing with our toys and showing off our hats. I even found a place that will sell them outside of crackers. I think we could have some mightly cute pictures with everyone in their party hats :D]]> Randy and Me! - Modeling on The Knot Live http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/88027 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/88027 Wed, 07 Oct 2009 13:58:00 PST I had such a great time modeling on The Knot Live today. I got there bright and early for hair and makeup. The Knot offices are so cool- overflowing with fake cakes, flowers, wedding books and magazines everywhere. Randy was there to help me lace up the gown when the time came! He said, tell me if it hurts, I can break a rib! But I know that beauty is pain, so I sucked it in and sucked it up for fashion! He's so sweet and down to earth (everyone I met at The Knot and Kleinfeld's seemed that way). You can see a few more of my pictures here. To watch me, go here and watch episode 16 (summary here).]]> Life as a Model - I'm going to be on The Knot Live! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/87851 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/87851 Tue, 06 Oct 2009 17:39:00 PST I'm so excited- I was picked to be one of the real-life bride models on tomorrow's broadcast of The Knot Live, a weekly internet show done on the Knot. Tomorrow's show features three real brides of different body types wearing dresses picked for them by Randy from Say Yes to the Dress! I am so excited. I had a chance to go to Kleinfeld's today for a fitting for the dress. That store is so incredibly lovely, even better than it looks on TV. All the girls you see on the show were there, helping clients. Randy is a doll and picked out a gorgeous dress that highlights my "busty" figure. It has a corset back, and he's like, tell me if I'm hurting you lacing it up. I'm like, hey, beauty is pain, go for it. And he said, oh, I could break a rib. Ha! I'm down. Hope you'll all have a chance to watch! I'll post a link to the video when they post it online, for those who can't watch live.]]> Wedding Invitation - Help me proof! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/87243 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/87243 Sat, 03 Oct 2009 10:11:00 PST These are the invites I keep coming back to. They're from Costco, and very reasonably priced. Look over them and let me know if I'm forgetting anything. I don't think I am, but you never know- I've heard of girls leaving all sorts of important stuff off the invitation, including the date or the time! We're keeping the invites simple, choosing to put a lot of stuff on our wedding website. If you can think of anything we definitely shouldn't leave off the website, let me know! I've been going back and forth all month on whether I should order invites now. Part of me is like, yes, do it now, get it over with. Another part is like, eh, what if something better comes along and I'm stuck with the ones I already ordered? But I've been looking for awhile, and I haven't found anything I like as much for $74 per 100!]]> Wedding Decoration - Pom-poms on the brain http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/85317 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/85317 Wed, 23 Sep 2009 00:22:00 PST Can't sleep. Not tired. Getting to sleep in every day can do that to a girl. Plus, why sleep when you can think about wedding stuff? I still feel stuck on what color or colors to use for the pom-poms in our reception hall. I looked at some Google images of Martha Stewart pom-poms, and saw lots of nice things, but there's still nothing jumping out at me like, WOW, YES, THOSE ARE THE COLORS YOU SHOULD USE. I had been very into purple for awhile, but I feel my purple passion fading away, with nothing jumping in to take its place. Ah well. Something will come to me, probably through seeing it at some other bride's wedding, shamelessly stealing it, and taking all credit for it.]]> Costco has 'em! - Glass bottle beverages http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/85001 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/85001 Mon, 21 Sep 2009 15:51:00 PST Look what we saw at Costco today! IZZE in glass bottles! I love these, I buy them at Starbucks all the time. Perfect for a "Soda Shop" display. I tell you, I was tempted to just buy out everything they had and store it until the wedding. But the drinks rebelled- each box had "Good until April 19 2010" stamped on top. One day before our wedding. Ok, ok, we'll wait! **Edit: Please note the comment below from "stynxno" (Marc), which rigthfully points out that April 19th isn't one day before our wedding, it's one day before my birthday. Yea, I'm dumb.** ]]> Inspiration Board - Soda Shop! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/84671 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/84671 Sat, 19 Sep 2009 15:44:00 PST Oh yes, I stole this idea from Vicenta. How cute are these multi-colored sodas in glass bottles? I love it. I would definitely like to serve sodas this way at our reception. I don't know that we'd be able to find that many colors, but I imagine we could find at least 2-3 choices. Where can you find soda in glass bottles, anyway? Costco? We may have to wrangle up a car and see if we can get out of the city for a trip to Wal-Mart or Target.]]> Wedding Cake - Customized topper is almost ready! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/84449 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/84449 Fri, 18 Sep 2009 09:06:00 PST We bought our topper from Naked Peggies on Etsy. She said it would take about a month to do the first version, and then she'd e-mail us photos. Exactly one month later, she sent us the first pictures, and I love it! It's so cute, it looks just like us. Even Marc's big head looks like the real thing. The only change we're making is to have her dot on a wee bit of hair for Marc. Then they'll be twins! Hope I don't marry the wrong one by mistake.]]> Family Visit - Sister comes to town for Turkey Day http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/83470 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/83470 Sun, 13 Sep 2009 22:24:00 PST I'm so excited that my youngest sister has decided to come and spend Thanksgiving weekend with me here in NYC! She hasn't visited in awhile. We're already discussing all sorts of crazy plans- like going to the parade! And eating a Thanksgiving meal that consists of nothing but potatoes. I also plan to use her visit as an excuse to do some wedding stuff I really want to have her input on. Like taking my dress somewhere I can try it on with a petticoat to decide if I want to buy one or if it's better without. And makeup and hair trials! There are some things a girl just needs her sister for :D]]> Inspiration Board - Silly Bride Badges http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/83217 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/83217 Sat, 12 Sep 2009 09:03:00 PST Just yesterday, The Knot announced their new bridal badges, for message board profiles and signatures. But some board posters didn't feel their personal styles were represented in the provided badges, so with the help of Photoshop and a few savvy users, everybody re-did their badges. How funny are these? Note to Knot users: I didn't link back icons to screennames because I wasn't sure if people would want that, but if you do, please leave a comment and I will edit the caption.]]> Inspiration Board - Another makeup look I love http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82898 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82898 Thu, 10 Sep 2009 13:29:00 PST How much do you love, love, LOVE this Jamie-Lynn Sigler look? I adore it. Fresh cheeks, muted lip, emphasis on the eyes with a perfect mix of colors. This picture is the closest thing I've seen to an exact picture of the look I'm going for; the only thing I would change is to cut back on some of the darkness under the eyes.]]> Wedding Reception - Room setup for our cake & punch http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82540 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82540 Tue, 08 Sep 2009 20:12:00 PST I admit it: sometimes, I obsess. I get something in my mind and roll it around, like a big rock, until it comes around all nice and smooth. Hey, I'm unemployed, what else do I have to do? My current obsession/worry is over the setup for our reception space. We're in our church basement every week, but I still haven't wrapped my mind around exactly how we're going to set everything up for our afternoon cake & punch reception. For weekly Sunday fellowship, there's a number of long, rectangular tables set up for everybody to sit at, which most do, although some flit about, preferring to linger near the food (that's me) or chase after their kids in the nursey. And this is a lovely setup, with plenty of room- for the 40 or so people who come down for coffee and bagels after service. We're looking at a guest list of over 200, with a probable final guest count somewhere in the 150 range. You can see my dilemma. In my dreams, the room would have a "cocktail hour" feel. There would be plenty of chairs for everyone who wants to sit down (hmm, better check that the church owns that many chairs), with low tables for people to rest their drinks on, and open space around higher tables for people to congregate around. The higher tables, scattered around the room, could each contain another one of our dessert options- some cookies, nuts, brownies, and so forth. The stage at the far end of the room would contain our gift table, candy buffet and the cake table. There will be room enough for people to dance, should they feel inclined. The whole thing will feel warm and cozy, casual and friendly, like so many of the church gatherings before ours. I'm not sure if the room is big enough to encapsulate my dream scenario, but in the next few weeks, I'm going to take some concrete steps toward figuring it out. Tomorrow, when I stop by weekly playgroup to say hello to everyone, I'm going to measure the room, the rectangular tables, and the chairs, draw a rough sketch of where all the outlets and current set things (like the big pews near the back walls) are, and take some pictures. From there, we put our heads together and see what the best setup will be, given our guest list, our budget and the space provided. I have a few party rental places bookmarked, in case we need to rent items. But most of all, I'm going to try not to stress too much about this detail. I've thrown parties before, even parties in this space before (I throw a mean Halloween party for kids!), and I know that in the end, it doesn't take much for my friends and family to make themselves comfortable at a party. Good food, good friends, a spot of champagne- it'll be a blast!]]> Wedding Gift Registry - Fishs Eddy does registries! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82089 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/82089 Sun, 06 Sep 2009 12:25:00 PST Fishs Eddy, our favorite store in NYC for all things tabletop, has just announced they've started doing gift registries! Very dangerous! We already registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond and Williams-Sonoma for more than enough, but I don't know if we'll be able to resist the call of Fishs Eddy! Even if we just keep it as a reference for all the things we want to buy after the wedding. Seriously, how cute are these mugs? And these dishes? And these glasses? I can't wait to have an apartment nice enough to entertain in, so I have an excuse to own and use all this cute stuff!]]> Wedding Invitation - So many Stamps! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81935 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81935 Sat, 05 Sep 2009 09:01:00 PST I've always loved postage stamps. Ever since I saw the Puppy Love stamps in the mid-80s, I'm always keeping my eyes open for new and beautiful stamps for my letters. Every year at holiday time, I make my annual pilgrimage to the post office to pick up some pretty stamps to use on my Christmas cards. And now, you can even buy stamps online, cutting out the unpleasant post office visit entirely! Thank goodness, I'm sure I have better things to do with that hour and a half. I've skimmed over the website to see if there's any clear winner on what stamps I'd like to use for our wedding invitations, but I just can't decide! There are so many beautiful choices. I love that they still sell old designs from previous price structures (wish they still made the Puppy Love stamps! I'd use those in a heartbeat). Even the 1- and 2- cent stamps to make up the difference are beautiful! I have a feeling I will use the wedding as an excuse to buy a little bit of each stamp design I like, mixing and matching on invites and thank-you notes, and storing up the rest for future use. Isn't it great that the USPS works to make something so practical so beautiful as well?]]> My Fair Wedding? - I don't think so! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81586 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81586 Thu, 03 Sep 2009 10:28:00 PST While browsing Glamour magazine, I came across an ad for "My Fair Wedding". I've never seen the show, but the ad seems to lay out the general idea, which is that there's this guy I've never heard of and he gives brides advice on weddings. "Every Bride has a vision. He has revisions." See, there on the left are the BAD brides. They're doing BAD stuff like wearing color and making funny faces. Look at the one in the front, her dress is BLACK! Bad bride, bad! On the right is the GOOD brides. They're all wearing the same dress and the same vacant expression. The black dress bride has been redone in white, and she looks adoringly at the stylist guy, as if to say, thank you for telling me what I want! In case you couldn't tell, the ad ticks me off. Who gives a care what some reality show nobody says is or is not appropriate for a bride to wear? If she wants to wear white, black, red, green, sequins or plaid, that's her choice. I'm sick of wedding blather that suggest that a bride should work to please others on her wedding day. It's baloney! The only opinion a bride should care about is her own. Because here's the thing about trying to please other people- it's impossible! You can't please all the people all of the time. Why set yourself up for failure from the get-go? If you focus on your own opinions and make your own decisions to please yourself, you'll always win! When I was in middle school, my Dad retired after 20 years in the Marine Corps. For the ceremony, my Mom bought me a Limited Too dress that had black stripes and big pleather flowers on the chest. She also bought me a pair of the most awesome sneakers every created- silver glitter Sketchers, which I wore every day after for about two years. I had a plastic glitter box purse that I had decorated myself with stickers, and to complete the ensemble, I wore a small purple star sticker on my face (hey, when I was in middle school, that was all the rage, or at least it was with me). I felt like a million bucks. Others disagreed- someone (can't remember who- someone my Dad worked with or some distant friend, I think) even told me at the ceremony, oh, someday you'll look back on this outfit and regret it. I wasn't offended, not even for a second, because I knew that she was wrong. I felt AWESOME! I still have a picture of that outfit, and I love looking at it. That woman was wrong, I don't regret the outfit for a second- I love it, even now at 26. And that's how I think all brides should feel on their wedding day- totally confident in your choices, totally secure in your decisions whatever they may be, totally beautiful and in love. Purple star optional. Nobody will be able to take that away from you, not if you live 100 years. ]]> Employment Update - Still searching http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81242 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81242 Tue, 01 Sep 2009 10:00:00 PST You will all recall I got laid off in early March. Interviewing has picked up a lot in the last two months, but I'm still unemployed. There are some good things about being unemployed- more time for volunteer work at my church, no stress from dealing with office politics, and a summer that was all my own. That's exciting; who knows when that will happen again in my life, to have a whole summer free. That said, I'm ready for a job. I want a regular paycheck. Particularly to pay for my wedding! We're sort of in limbo at this point- we can pay for what we've already planned, but we can't plan anything further, including a honeymoon, until we see how things shake out. I've had a lot of good interviews lately, and all the recruiters I'm working with seem to think I'll be employed soon. I hope so. The rejection of all the jobs I haven't gotten is tough to take. Now I know for sure that acting wouldn't have been a good career for me.]]> Inspiration Board - Pretty makeup on Kate Gosselin http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81168 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81168 Mon, 31 Aug 2009 20:28:00 PST While waiting for the train this evening, I poked my head into the subway bodega to have a glance at the tabloid covers for the week. Same ole stories- Aniston is desperate, Lohan is crazy, Brangelina are either about to break up or adopt another child. I glanced at People and my first thought was, oh great, another Gosselins story, when are those two going to get it together and put their kids first? My second thought was, hey, Kate looks good, that makeup would be great for a wedding! A very light smoky eye, pink cheeks, pretty rosy lips. I hate to give that woman any credit, but I'll give it to her now- girlfriend looks good.]]> My little Hispanic - Proud of his heritage http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81071 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/81071 Mon, 31 Aug 2009 08:05:00 PST We are very lucky to be living in Queens, NY, the most ethnically diverse place in the United Stated and some say the world. National Geographic just did a documentary on studying all the different ethnic groups right here in this neighborhood, in fact- The Human Family Tree. Marc and I were even part of the study group! We were there at the street fair where we did the initial cheek swab testing, and we were there at the follow-up event, too. You see Marc in the documentary about 6 times in his signature grey hat, along with the side of my head about 3. Marc is very proud of his hispanic heritage. Just yesterday, he was telling the people we were talking to at church fellowship that he can't wait to throw big QuinceaƱera parties for any daughters he has. Sometimes I almost forget that I'm going to be in an interracial marriage- and that one day when I have children, they'll be hispanic, too. That's neat, and makes me very proud. I'm very glad we're going to have several chances to honor Marc's background at our wedding, starting with the rehearsal dinner. There is a pocket of great Mexican restaurants just down the block from our church, which makes them a perfect spot for our rehearsal dinner. I can think of no better pre-wedding meal than guacamole and enchiladas! We also have a great tradition at our church of saying the Lord's Prayer in a foreign language before doing it in English, to remind ourselves that the Church is a worldwide body, and since we have several friends who speak Spanish, we will ask one of them to recite the prayer in Spanish for us. Marc also discussed doing the Mexican Hat Dance as our first dance, although I think he may have been joking. What the heck! I like a Mariachi band just as much as the next guy. Will you have a chance to honor your heritage at your wedding? My heritage is a bit more vague, so I don't know that we'll have too many chances to get it in. I would love to incorporate the family Torah that's been passed down over 100 years on my Dad's side (my Father is Jewish by blood and became a practicing Christian in college), but seeing that it's in Florida and quite old, I don't think it's going to make it.]]> Guest List - Only inviting people who want to come http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/80845 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/80845 Sat, 29 Aug 2009 13:14:00 PST When I first started imagining the sort of wedding I wanted to have, I didn't care what we ate, where we sat, or what kind of music was playing in the background. All that mattered was having all the people we love there. And we love a lot of people. Our families are very close, we're very involved in our church, we've stayed in touch with many friends from high school and college, and we have a lot of friends here in NYC. The preliminary guest list we put together is roughly 225, including an open invitation at our church. When it comes to etiquette, Miss Manners is my queen. I try to follow her laws to the letter, particularly when it comes to wedding planning (except her rule about engraved invitations- sorry, Miss M, in that one specific case, I think you're behind the times). I very much like what she has said about the first steps of wedding planning- "there is something inherently rude in allowing style and cost to prevail over emotional bonds. When something has to be cut, it should be the menu and frills, not the guests." This is why we decided to keep our wedding simple, by having our ceremony in the afternoon and serving light refreshments in the church basement afterwards- we did not want to exclude any of our family, fellow church members or friends from being there with us if they wanted to be. I figured making that decision right off the bat would make putting together the rest of the guest list a cinch. And I was wrong. There's still a lot of gray area when it comes to putting together a guest list, and for me it all boils down to- what's the best way for me to include all who wanted to be included and exclude those who want to be excluded? As much as I'd like to think that everyone I've ever met desperately wants an invite to my wedding, I've read enough complaints about wedding invites to know that some consider weddings more drudgery than delight. I wouldn't want to invite anyone who feels that way. How do I identify those people? There are a lot of people in my life that I love being around, even if we aren't very close or I don't see them all that often. I imagine some of then would want to come and some of them wouldn't, so how do I tell the difference? I suppose I'll never know for sure, so all I can do is send an invitation, and hope that nobody feels the need to attend my wedding out of obligation. People, please, stay home! It's more seats in the pews! More room on the dance floor! More cake for me!]]> Bridesmaids - I'm going to be one! http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/80613 http://www.weddingbycolor.com/thepinksuperhero/milestones/80613 Thu, 27 Aug 2009 21:49:00 PST My dear friend Jess from college is getting married in October to a great guy. I was tinkled pink to be invited to be one of 4 bridesmaids. We had all originally planned to order dresses together, but due to being misled by the woman at the dress shop on dress deadlines, we missed the boat on ordering without huge rush fees. Boooooo. Anyway, that left me on my own to find a chocolate brown cocktail dress. I was worried! I looked around a few stores, and didn't see anything. I looked online, and couldn't find anything in my size. I really did not know what I was going to do- I'm a girl of limited means, I didn't want to end up spending more on the dress I picked then the one we could've ordered at rush prices. Then one day before an interview downtown, I stopped into Century 21, the famous NYC designer outlet. Holy mother of bridesmaids dresses! What a great selection of dresses they had. There were several chocolate brown dresses for me to try on, and the one that I liked best was only $50! Score! Seriously, stop by this store the next time you're in NYC, it is a shopper's paradise. I know Jess is disappointed that we didn't all get to order the dresses she had originally picked out, but like the trooper she is, she chose to go forward with what we could get. These are the pictures I sent to her- complete with my computer glasses and a dress that needs some serious attention from an iron. The green pashmina is part of the bridesmaids ensemble- she and I personally tracked those down on Canal Street in Chinatown, visiting 20 or 30 shops before we found the exact shade of green she wanted and someone with as many as we needed! What fun we had that day- and what fun our fiances had, camped out at Burger King, drinking soda and talking football until we returned.]]>
