Ask a Question
To smash or not to smash?

You've said your "I dos," you've been toasted by the best man and maid-of-honor and you've made your way around your reception to say a quick hello to each guest -- it's now time to cut the cake. Once you have your sugary slice in hand, do you sweetly offer it to your new husband or do you get feisty and smear it onto his/her unsuspecting face? :)

We are definitely not going to smash it.

not a chance in hell. I've already told him that I would be FURIOUS if he does it with me. I don't see that its funny, or hilarious. I just see it as being outright rude. Especially when I've paid a lot of money for my makeup to be done so that I could look perfect FOR HIM.

We're not the kind of couple who like to degrade each other in public. He would never, not because I would be pissed but its because he would never embarrass me or make me look bad in front of people for his enjoyment.

I've heard it's bad luck to smash the cake in the face.  Just throwing that out there!

I didn't do it at my wedding, but my friend put it on her husband's head (he is bald) and it was really funny :)

And one guy dabbed icing from her cheek, neck shoulder and down her arm and then kissed it all off... (her dress was strapless so it worked and he didn't com across rude at all, just sneaky *wink wink

if he gets cake on me, i'll leave him right then and there and get an anulment. I refuse to be publically humiliated so he can act like a child. I was at a wedding recently where both the bride and groom SLAMMED cake on eachother, and right up eachother noses. It was everywhere and she had to go wash her entire face off, make up and all. It was so childish. We will be feeding eachother with forks. If he wants to be funny..... then it won't be with the cake cutting.

I was always told the way you feed them cake is a representation of showing how much they can trust you in that marriage.

We had this conversation the other night and we both agreed not to smash!  I would be livid if cake ended up in my hair or messing up my make-up!

I would like to tease him with it just a little though, but definitely no smashing for us!

I wouldn't wanted smashed all in my face. If it got a little messy around the lips i wouldn't care, but all over your pretty proffesional make-up job! lol. My aunt got furious and my uncle when they did the cake cutting, and he promised he wouldnt!

We're not going to do it. It wasn't even discussed really, but it's not something we would do. Like others have mentioned, you spend (time) and money on your make up to look "perfect" and it's all ruined  for a few seconds on fun and a laugh. Not really worth it to me. BUT, if another couple decided to do it, what do I care? I wouldn't think anything of it. It's their wedding and their money so if they want to do it its their choice and I can't judge them for that.

Absolutely no smashing...I agree with what the other brides are saying...it's a childish tradition. There are other ways to be funny. Our bridal party and my FI and I are entering the reception to a funny song, there are other ways to be funny at your wedding without getting cake everywhere.

if you don't want to it's entirely understandable.  if it's not your thing then it's not your thing.  but if you honestly think "the way you feed them cake is a representation of showing how much they can trust you in that marriage" then i suggest taking a break from wedding planning and doing a little research as to what marriage is really about...i'll give you a hint, there's a lot more to it than cake (and on that note i'd value my partner's past behavior and overall honesty in our relationship more than how he handles pastry when it comes to determining if i can trust him or not in our marriage).  it's fun to plan and discuss, but you really won't have enough time to take this one day so seriously.  as long as you're honest when you make your vows then that's really all that matters.  and by the by, we married, we smashed, and we're undoubtedly happy all the same :)

actually emaria I caught onto you attempting to insult my awareness of marriage but I don't need it. Tradition says that the cake feeding is a representation of your demonstration to your new spouse in front of the people you know of your trust. In many cultures it is considered downright insulting to the family of the spouse who gets cake smashed on them. It can cause fights as well. Don't assume you are knowledged in all cultures. Smashing it is more of a modern thing. I think its just plain rude and childish unless you both want to be childish together. I don't need to stop my wedding planning and rethink jack crap, I've known my fiance since I was 4 years old. You ought to watch how you speak to people you don't know!

To be honest I think it's hilarious when other couples do it lol  we will NOT be doing that!!! I don't want cake on my face & dress, plus My FH will be wearing a white tux so he can't get it dirty.

I personally think it's funny also but we are going to have a talk beforehand about the dress and makeup. We will probably get a little messy, we can be immature like that but it's fun and part of why we love each other. Just as long as he stays away from my eye-makep and my dress! Otherwise there maybe blood lol!

I think it's funny when it's someone else but it won't happen at my own wedding. I want to be able to walk away from the cake table and dance and still look great in all of the pictures... not like my daughter looked on her first birthday with blue icing in her hair, smeared all over her face, in her ears and on her outfit. :] I guess it's fine if you know before hand that you're going to be a mess but I'd like to stay beautifully intact for the remainder of the night... well until the honeymoon suite anyway... haha

My FH keeps joking (I hope he is joking at least) that he is going to smash the cake in my face.  I have already made it clear that if he did this I would be totally (excuse the language) but PISSED at him.  The female spends a lot of time and money to look beautiful on their special day, I don't need to be in the bathroom taking cake off my face and out of my hair...no thanks.
