DIY Monogram Cake Topper

So I am about to order my monogram "W" cake topper from crafty Eddy and I have a few questions for you DIY brides.

1.) What is a good size letter to order? I'm leaning towards 6" since I'm just getting one letter for the top of the cake. I am just hoping it is not too heavy! At the same time I am afraid to go smaller because I'm worried that it won't stand out. Our cake will also have flowers on top, so I wanted the "W" to be large enough to be seen among the flowers...lol.

2.) What type of paint should I use to paint the topper? And what type of glue should I use to put the crystals on it? I don't want to poison people...so I am concerned.
